Two Reasons the Changing Seasons can Skyrocket Your Business

In California (I suspect Florida as well) we don’t truly experience the four seasons the same way many of you do in the other parts of our country. Love it or hate it, it’s California, and the only real climate change we experience is a slight drop from the mid to high 80s in the Summer, down to the mid to low 70s in the fall, and if we’re lucky, maybe a little rain in the 60s during the winter. Yesterday I took a walk with my wife in our neighborhood of San Marino, CA and it was still 90 degrees.

For us Californians, the climate doesn’t really mark the changing of seasons. For me personally, I know we are in the Fall when Starbucks starts offering their PSL (pumpkin spice lattes) and when McDonald’s brings back the McRib. That’s when I decide it’s time to wear the wools, greys, reds, and plaids.

A farmer knows how seasons work and adjust their activities to the season they are in. There is a season to plant seeds, and there is a season to harvest. There are specific fruits or vegetables that will grow only during certain seasons. The farmer has no control over this. All he/she can do is plant their seeds during the right season and once planted, they have to wait until the next season for the crop to grow, monitoring the progress the entire way.

Now, some may argue that with the assistance of science, farmers are able to manipulate this and harvest out of season fruit-I won’t debate that or even refute that as I’m no expert in that field.

The point is: the farmer has adapted his/her business model around the changing seasons. This change that occurs every 3-4 months or so can be a positive catalyst in your business-if you learn to embrace it.

In the Old and New Testament, the word faith appears approximately 180 times in comparison to the word season which appears approximately 60 times. That’s a 3 to 1 ratio and is fitting, considering that your success during any particular season, is based on your faith.

Reason # 1: Nothing Lasts Forever (especially the hard times)

I believe that the whole reason God created seasons, was to remind you that nothing is permanent. No season lasts forever. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of making statements like, “I’ve always been like this…” or “Things never change…” but I promise you those statements are not true and every 3-4 months or so you are blessed with the gift of seasons as a reminder to you that even if you don’t believe that things can and do change everything around can and does.

You might feel like you’re stuck in a valley right now and that this dark season just doesn’t seem to end. These are normal emotions. We ALL experience them.

Here’s how I handle these dark seasons. STOP talking about your present situation and/or challenges. STOP repeating them verbally and more importantly in your head. STOP reminding yourself about how bad things are. I know firsthand what it’s like to have someone in your circle that only preaches doom and gloom and I have to tell you that it eventually takes its toll on you and you’ll eventually begin repeating all their negative mojo. Stay away from those people. Love them from afar.

START talking about the situation/environment you want to be in. START speaking about how wonderful it will be when you arrive there. START verbalizing it and saying it out loud.

Here’s the thing, it’s not a matter of IF things will change, it’s more a question of will YOU change and adapt to the season.

Reason # 2: It Can Get Boring Being on Top

Here’s the flip side. Industry disruptors are a perfect example of changing seasons. These disruptors aren’t always technologically driven. Think about the financial market crash of 2007. That was a major disruptor to many industries. Nothing lasts forever and this is a good thing.

I’m not saying you should operate from a position of fear. I am saying you can’t be so blinded by the harvest season you are in, that you do not recognize opportunities to stretch yourself and grow. Let me be clear, this doesn’t mean you say yes to every opportunity that crosses your path. It just means you keep an open eye and an ear to the street.

The benefit of seasons changing in our professional careers is that they keep things interesting. It’s very simple for something that you originally found challenging and exciting to become dull and boring as you master that craft. When you operate from a position of disinterest your final product sucks. Period.

You should embrace the changing seasons. There is a season to work. There is a season to harvest. Nothing is constant. Your situation can and will improve. Allow the changing seasons to keep things interesting, fresh, and fun.

I look forward to hearing about your success!
